Scotland Yard is investigating the mysterious death of an office secretary and has come up with several prime suspects, including young writer Hugh Allen (Edward Underdown) and the famously bitter author Jonathan Roche (James Robertson Justice). None of the men can prove where they were on the night of the murder, so the police monitor their movements. When Hugh falls in love with Jonathan's wife, Alycia (Valerie Hobson), the relationship threatens to destroy them all.
